Emergency crews in Farmington were trying to rescue a man trapped in a corn silo Thursday afternoon.
The man, who was not identified, had gone into the silo at the grain elevator on the city's west side to clear up a clog about 11:15 a.m. when the corn shifted and buried him up to his chest, said Farmington Police Chief Brian Lindquist.
Rescuers were in contact with the man, who they described as conscious and not seriously injured, as they devised a plan to extract him without causing more corn to shift and bury him further. By 2 p.m., crews had cut a hole in the top of the bin above where the man was pinned against one of its walls.
The man is an employee of PH Feely and Son Inc., which owns the elevator behind City Hall in downtown Farmington.
The Farmington police and fire departments, several neighboring fire departments, two ambulances, a Dakota County special operations team and members of the Minnesota Collapsed Structure Rescue Team of Edina were on the scene.
