Fire at Cenex Harvest States Grain Dryer October 19, 2009
CROOKSTON, MN - A fire broke out around 3 p.m. Monday in a grain dryer at the Cenex Harvest States grain elevator on Highway 75 South on Crookston's southern edge.
Crookston Area Ambulance personnel were monitoring things on the scene, but it appeared no one was hurt.
Crookston Firefighters responded in force with a full pumper truck and, using the ladder truck, were able to knock down the flames in the dryer as well as keep the adjacent wall of the main elevator cool by dousing it. But when they emptied the pumper tank and it left to get more water, the flames rose up again in the dryer. Once the pumper returned with a full tank, firefighters got the best of the flames once again, and continued to douse the main elevator. When the empty pumper left again, the flames crept up in the dryer a third time, but shortly after, it appeared that firefighters and Water Department personnel were able to run a length of hose to a hydrant just off Highway 75 and, with added water pressure from the city water system, firefighters appeared to be containing the blaze.
There is no word on a cause at this point.
